What was the inspiration behind the design concept for this property?

The source of inspiration was primarily rooted in an emotional experience rather than being influenced by any visual cues or references.

From the outset, I had a strong working relationship with the owners, who are also my closest friends. Due to our close bond, we were well aware of our shared preferences and sense of style. Our conversations centered around the kind of experience we aspired to create for guests staying at the Norman.

The aim was to establish a warm and inviting ambiance while also capturing the unique personality of the owner.

But to define the architectural characteristics of the house, I would describe it as a combination of futuristic design elements, Brazilian modernism, and the cozy simplicity associated with Scandinavian hygge.

Could you share some key design elements or features that make this property unique?

In order to complement the contemporary and minimal interior architecture, we have incorporated a lot of textures and warm colors. The decorative elements we have chosen consist mainly of vintage items, locally sourced thrifted pieces, or objects that hold a special significance to the homeowners' personal history.

For example, there are certain products that originate from Brazil, a nation that holds a special place in our hearts and with which we share a deep affinity.

The artwork displayed here belongs to our friends who are an integral part of our close-knit community in New York.

The dining table we use is secondhand and comes from a beloved local coffee shop where we often spend time together.

How did you approach the selection of colors, textures, and materials to create a cohesive and inviting space?

Initially, we shared some points of reference to establish our alignment. Subsequently, my attention shifted towards what I refer to as "hardware" - which pertains to the larger furniture items.

Assembling these components allows the decor to effortlessly come together. By prioritizing thrifted and vintage props, the element of surprise is unavoidable when it comes to discovering hidden gems along the way.

However, we swiftly determined the specific shades and textures we desired, such as various types of wood, terracotta, baskets, and studio pottery. Our aim was to incorporate elements that embody organic shapes and sensations.

Were there any specific challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenges are often from external factors, such as deliveries or delays. Another difficulty when attempting to design a space using pre-owned items is the lack of predictability, requiring trust that you will find the perfect objects. It's a time-intensive process!

Masterbedroom

Can you tell us about any interesting or innovative design solutions you incorporated into this property?

Our aim was to maintain a clean and unrestricted main living area, allowing renters the flexibility to rearrange chairs and lamps according to their preferences. The modular nature of the furniture pieces ensures endless options for mixing and matching.

How did you ensure that the design reflected the client's vision and lifestyle?

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have these individuals as my close friends and possess a deep understanding of their personalities. However, as with any aspect of life, effective communication is crucial! Providing specific examples and discussing them can often provide a clear understanding of the client's expectations.

Are there any standout rooms or areas within the property that you particularly enjoyed designing, and what makes them special?

In all honesty, I thoroughly enjoyed designing each room in the house. It is a privilege to work in such a stunning new environment with clients who trust me and share a similar vision.
