Home Truths

Bliss House is a historical gilded age Italianate mansion, which was commissioned by socialite Jeanette Bliss in 1907 and evokes the grandeur of Palladio's architectural masterpieces in Venice. The property was designed in the early 1900s by architects George Lewis Heins and Christopher Grant LaFarge, who specialized in designing social clubs.

While the house was being constructed, Jeannette traveled to Europe in search of period rooms. For the third floor of her new home she purchased an 18th century polyhedral mirrored boudoir from the Hôtel De Crillon in Paris. The room had been made for Louis-Marie-Augustin, duc d'Aumont. And, for her salon, Jeanette purchased boiserie originally designed for the Hôtel De Sens in Paris.

After Jeannette passed away in 1923, her daughter Susan Bliss would later donate her mother's boudoir to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it exhibited in the Wrightsman Collection, and her library room to Bowdoin College in Maine. After Susan passed away in 1967, the home served as the Clinical Psychologist Center for Marital and Family Therapy, the Bliss mansion was converted to rental apartments, whose former residents included actors including Candice Bergen and Al Pacino.

We'll soon be welcoming many new faces to this historical property, where the setting has been edited to celebrate both its female-spirit and cultural heritage.

We absolutely loved our stay at Bliss House! The apartment was beautiful and looked exactly like the listing. The building has the charm of a boutique resorted NYC mansion and with a Parisian style. Emily was very easy to communicate with and was available to help when needed. The furniture and amenities were well maintained, and the hosts equipped it with almost anything that would be needed for the stay. The tall ceilings make this 1 bedroom feel much larger than expected. I would gladly stay here again!

I really enjoyed my stay. The building felt safe and quiet. The location was great! Lots of upscale shopping and nice neighborhood restaurants and cafes. The apartment was well appointed and clean. The hosts were excellent - helpful and responsive to any questions. The new laundry room on the lower level is such a helpful amenity. Packages were easy to receive during my stay and building residents are very respectful of each other. I would definitely recommend a stay at Bliss House. But book early, the available units book months in advance.

The apartment is in a great location in the upscale Upper East Side and very close to Central Park which we enjoyed very much. The apartment is fairly spacious for two. However we did not feel it was good value for what we paid. The furniture is generally uncomfortable to sit or lay in. The dining chairs and couch are hard. The bed is very small and has edges protruding, and in particular the left side of the bed has a tiny space to walk through which cannot be shifted. I banged my shins on the outside wood frame several times in the middle of the night. The aircon makes very loud noises causing sleep disturbances. The shower water pressure is very weak and the tub drains very slowly causing showers to be extra long. While the location and size were great. The apartment lacks certain simple comforts that should be easy to fix with better attention to detail.
