After Jeannette passed away in 1923, her daughter Susan Bliss would later donate her mother's boudoir to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it exhibited in the Wrightsman Collection, and her library room to Bowdoin College in Maine. After Susan passed away in 1967, the home served as the Clinical Psychologist Center for Marital and Family Therapy, the Bliss mansion was converted to rental apartments, whose former residents included actors including Candice Bergen and Al Pacino.

We'll soon be welcoming many new faces to this historical property, where the setting has been edited to celebrate both its female-spirit and cultural heritage.

Set atop the sixth floor of Bliss House—once the mansion’s trunk room and workshop—this two-bedroom penthouse feels like a hidden cottage in the sky. With quaint proportions, a private balcony, and natural light spilling in from all directions, the apartment carries an air of quiet romance and retreat. Its palette—beachy earth tones like pale sand, freshly cut oak, and rammed earth—grounds the space in warmth, while vintage Murano glass fixtures and contemporary lighting by Michelle Aero cast a soft, cinematic glow throughout.

Step inside through a long, gallery-like hallway, where hand-laid pale sand bricks line the floor and frameless doors disappear into the walls. A swirled glass and brass ceiling light casts prismatic shadows, guiding you past a nautical mirror by Krøyer Lassen, an olive velvet footstool trimmed with fringe, and marble plinth shelves adorned with collected objects. Along the way, you’ll find a generous walk-in closet and a jewel-box powder room, clad in checkered zellige and Calacatta Viola marble. The hallway opens to a petite vestibule anchored by a vintage Stilnovo pendant, a boucle pouf, and a burlwood pedestal topped with a Barovier Murano vase, filled with dried botanicals. Just beyond, the kitchen waits—tucked discreetly off to the side.

The living room unfolds as a sculptural composition of curves and textures—anchored by a minimalist yet sensuous three-seat sectional and a pair of 1970s bamboo armchairs with boucle cushions and pill-shaped backs that feel more charming than serious. A Tired Man lounge chair in plush sheepskin by Flemming Lassen sits opposite a trio of marble plinths, while a mustard velvet bench by Rachel Donath—fringed and flirtatious—adds a touch of theatricality. A non-working fireplace and vintage bookshelf niche hint at the apartment’s storied past, while a gilt mirror and patchwork rug in creamy neutrals by Jake Arnold lend softness and balance. A 65” TV is discreetly placed, offering function without disrupting the room’s poetic calm.

The dining area gazes out to the terrace, bathed in daylight and anchored by a minimalist oak table by Danielle Siggerud, its curvaceous base echoing the organic rhythm of the home. Surrounding it, vintage-style rush chairs with arched backs—reminiscent of Charlotte Perriand—invite slow meals and long conversations. Above, an oversized rice paper lantern floats like a paper moon, while vintage Murano sconces add a whisper of old-world glamour. Along one wall, an olive-stained burlwood console rests beneath a vintage portrait of a society beauty, while a curio cabinet with reeded glass shimmers softly—its contents a quiet study in texture, memory, and restraint.

The primary bedroom feels like a secret retreat wrapped in light, with windows on three sides filtering the day through sheer white curtains. The palette is hushed—pale sand walls, a rich brown boucle bed by Sarah Sherman Samuel, and fossil stone nightstands with soft, sculptural edges. A burlwood dresser with vintage brass pulls anchors the space, while an olive loveseat by Norm Architects offers a quiet corner to unwind. A vintage Italian lamp with a rattan shade casts a golden glow, mirrored gently in a white Art Deco wall piece. Above the bed, a figurative work by Benjamin Ewing adds gravity and grace. On either side, Rachel Donath’s burlwood bedside lamps bring warmth and refinement.

The second bedroom is playful yet refined—painted in Fresh Oak and layered with pieces that feel storied and quietly theatrical. A cerused oak bed frame with a cream boucle headboard by Athena Calderone takes center stage, set beneath a dramatic 17th-century tapestry that hangs like a page from a forgotten novel. A glossy green leather-topped desk sits beneath a studded mirror, paired with a wavy chair that adds a whisper of whimsy. Glossy black lamps rest atop burlwood plinths like small sculptures, while soft white curtains and a walk-in closet lend the space both presence and privacy. Whether used as a moody alternative to the primary bedroom, a serene home office, or a charming guest room for children or visitors, this space adapts with quiet grace.

Every powder room at Bliss House tells its own story, and this one feels like a well-traveled jewel box. Clad in checkered zellige and Calacatta Viola marble, it’s richly tactile and softly cinematic. A rough-edged travertine sink floats effortlessly against the wall, paired with handmade brass fittings that glint like jewelry. Above it, a vintage 1960s Franco Albini mirror—framed in bamboo with soft squiggles dancing across its edge—brings a wink of irreverence to the elegance. Though petite, the room leaves a lasting impression: earthy, exquisite, and entirely its own.

The kitchen, tucked just off the vestibule, is cloaked in rich chocolate brown—a moody, intimate counterpoint to the apartment’s sun-washed palette. Our signature griege modern shaker cabinets are finished with slender brass fittings, creating a quietly glamorous backdrop for everyday rituals. Petite brass lights by Michelle Aero dot the ceiling like jewelry, giving the space a studded glow—more Gucci bag than galley. Though compact, the kitchen is beautifully appointed. A dedicated laundry closet in the foyer houses a full-sized stackable Miele washer and dryer—seamlessly hidden, effortlessly functional.

The apartment’s design channels the warmth and ease of a European countryside escape—infused with sun-washed textures, timeless silhouettes, and the quiet confidence of collected design. From the sculptural forms of Flemming Lassen and Norm Architects to the thoughtful touches of Sarah Sherman Samuel, Athena Calderone, and Rachel Donath, each piece has been chosen with care. A trio of figurative artworks by Dutch painter and surfer Julie Haverkemp—rendered in warm and cool tones—adds an organic rhythm throughout. The space is further enriched by vintage discoveries, noble materials, and accents from thoughtful, often female-founded makers. Romantic, curated, and entirely its own, this penthouse feels like a breath of fresh air—tucked gently above the city, waiting to be lived in.
