"Shatemuc" was built by my own hands from the ground up on the shores of the Hudson River. The original inhabitants of these lands were the Lenape who called the Hudson River "Shatemuc," meaning "the river that flows both ways." The home's seclusion affords tranquility and connection to nature yet it is minutes from downtown Kingston. The exposed timbers, huge kitchen, enormous windows and bi-fold doors, deck, high-ceilings and spectacular finishes are one-of-a-kind. And then there's the view!

AI Summary of Guest Reviews

Waking up to breathtaking sunrises over the Hudson River is just one of the many delights of Shatemuc. Guests rave about the stunning architecture, highlighted by massive beams and floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide an unparalleled view and a magical ambiance. The personal touches, from curated art to a friendly dog named Tashe, create an inviting atmosphere that feels like a cherished home rather than just a rental.

To stay in this riverfront house is to inhabit a dream. Nick designed (with the help of an architect) and built (also with help) the soaring post and beam home in a woodsy spot overlooking the Hudson River. From the primary bed we woke to majestic sunrises (a stash of eye shades are available for those who don't want that early morning alarm clock) and sat on the terrace far into the evening watching lights on the water and in the sky. Massive beams, the extra long black kitchen island, and a powerful open staircase highlight the masculine aesthetic, but architectural details like the gorgeous plumbing fixtures and set of antique office doors, not to mention the glass-walled showers, make it sexy. Airbnb is at its best when it lets me try out someone else's fantasy.

Gorgeous house and view! Nick built the house himself and he did an incredible job. We especially loved sitting out on the deck and watching sailboats go by the lighthouse. One note regarding the bathrooms: as described in the listing, there are windows from the shower - downstairs the window looks into the main living area and upstairs, onto the deck. The windows did not fog up much. Not a problem for some groups traveling together, but people who require more privacy might find it uncomfortable. The floor to ceiling windows provide unparalleled views but do note that in summer months they can also create a bit of a greenhouse effect in the primary bedroom. This would be an incredible place to stay in fall, winter, or spring but be aware if you have a low tolerance for heat. Nick was very proactive in his communication and we loved meeting his dog Tashe, who befriended us while we were there. Overall a great stay and we would return!

We only stayed for a short visit, but this was one of those places left a warm, positive impression. It's very clear from the moment you walk in that a lot of thought, care, and personality went into this home. It feels very personal while still being modern, fresh, and impeccably clean. You can tell the kind of person the owner is by all the books, art, and accolades peppered throughout the space. One of our favorite parts was discovering the little details throughout the house, from hidden rooms to unexpected surprises that made exploring the space fun. The river view is also stunning, waking up to seeing a bald eagle perched outside was pretty unforgettable. It's not just a rental but someone's home that's been designed and loved. We would absolutely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable, beautifully curated place to stay.

This is a beautiful house with the best view I have ever had in a rental. Nick was a phenomenal host. This is a 5 star property with the following caveats: It is not the entire house. Nick and his dog were in the basement. This is in the listing, but it’s a long listing and I missed it. It wasn’t an issue for us, but if seeing into Nick’s basement apartment from the back yard or visits from the dog bother you, contact Nick and talk about it. It seems like he would accommodate you. If being able to access the water from the property is important to you, this is not the place. You can only access the water at a pretty high tide. If you miss your window, you could have issues. Last, the 3rd bedroom is limited. It is not appropriate for small kids or anyone over 6’ and 200lbs. I am 5’10”; 205lbs and 56 years old. I could get up there, but it wasn’t fun. Just know what you are getting into. Also, there are some quirks to this place. Some were fun. Some not so much. But, great place
